Quaternary Era
2 MYA – present
Intense periods of glaciation occurred during the beginning of this era, alternating with warmer periods. Slowly the Earth's landscapes finally took on a modern aspect. The last glacial- interglacial era saw the extinction of the Pleistocene mega fauna, of which humans may have played a part in.
Birds singing filled the airs, and flowering plants- including the newly evolved grasses, herbs, shrubs and trees, provided a blanket of colour. Grasses invaded the open, semi arid savannah and provided food and habitat for a range of animals- from rodents to the horse ancestors. Saber tooth cats, mammoths with large canines and tusks roamed. Humans slowly occupied the planet. All fuelled by the sun.
