Carboniferous Era

The Age of forests and trees, dragonflies and fleas....

This time saw the rising sea levels. Many of the low lying coastal regions of the Old Devonian landscape were flooded and turned into shallow water Equatorial rain forests of this era were the first extensive forests of this earth. Plants built carbon-based tissues, locking up vast quantities of carbon from their surrounding environments. When the plants die, the decaying litter built up alternating layers of peat, sand and mud. Over time these accumulated sediments were compressed by marine sediments and transformed into coal seams, the fuel of today, fossilised prehistoric plants and animals! The ability for creatures to take to the air evolved in this time, 'invented' by insects'.

Plants slowly moved from the low lying swamps of the primordial seas up into higher and drier lands, creating habitat for animals as they went and the land became colonised for life as we know it to exist.
