Paleogene Era
65- 20 MYA
Following the massive extinctions of the Cretaceous, lifeforms emerged that either survived, adapted or now had a better chance of survival. Mammals, organisms that carry their young within to full term and nurse them with mammary glands now had the evolutionary fitness to flourish in this harsh landscape. A long period f cooling began, which eventually ended in the quaternary ice- age. This time saw the emergence of grass species, a new versatile plant form.
